HHM Releases 2023 Community Report

The lawyers and staff at Harrington, Hoppe & Mitchell, Ltd. are dedicated to supporting the Mahoning Valley. We provide financial and in-kind support throughout the year to organizations that support economic development, healthcare, education, the arts, food distribution, youth sports and much more.

Support for Community Organizations & Events

In 2023, HHM lawyers were proud to contribute financial support or time to dozens of local organizations and events.

Education

  • Harding High School – Matthew Ries supported the Warren Football team with sponsorships for the football association, football program ad and the Warren Legends. 
  • John F. Kennedy Catholic School – Kevin Murphy, Patrick Wilson, Michael McGee and James LaPolla were among the sponsors of the “Just for Kicks Auction.”
    • James LaPolla was among the sponsors of a golf outing that supports the boys basketball program.
    • Patrick Wilson supported the Speech and Debate Tournament, as well as the Flying Eagle Walk/Run.
    • James LaPolla, Patrick Wilson and Michael McGee contributed to the JFK golf team sponsorship.
    • James LaPolla coached the golf team, which won the Ohio Division III state high school golf championship! (James is second from the left in the photo below.)

  • Lakeview Local Schools — Patrick Wilson supported the schools’ fall and winter sports programs.
  • Niles Mock Trial Team — Matthew Ries served as an attorney advisor for the mock trial team at Niles McKinley High School. The team (pictured below) won in the district tournament and qualified for regional competition. 

  • Warren JFK Mock Trial Team — James LaPolla served as an attorney advisor for the mock trial team at Warren JFK High School. The team (with some members pictured below) won in the district tournament and qualified for regional competition.

  • United High School — Shawna L’Italien sponsored the stadium fence sign.
  • Ursuline High School— John Martynyszyn supported the school with a fall athletics program ad and attended the Hall of Fame Dinner. 

Health

  • Panerathon – HHM was among the sponsors of the Mahoning Valley’s largest fundraising event, which benefits the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center at St. Elizabeth Hospital, the first comprehensive breast care center in the region. A large group of HHM lawyers and their families participated (photo below).

  • Panera Knead for Knowledge – Kevin Murphy was among the sponsors of an event in Tampa, Fla., that supported Children’s Cancer Center of Tampa. 
  • Salem Regional Medical Center Foundation – Shawna L’Italien and Martin Boetcher sponsored the foundation’s annual gala and its golf outing.
  • Shepherd of the Valley – Patrick Wilson and Kevin Murphy were among the sponsors of a golf outing that benefits the Shepherd’s Foundation, a benefactor of Shepherd of the Valley retirement centers.

Civic and Charitable Causes

  • The Brightside Tree Project – Shawna L’Italien donated money for a lottery tree for the project’s Masquerade Ball fundraiser.
  • Community Action Agency of Columbiana County – HHM was among the sponsors of a golf outing that raises funds for the Healthier Community Food Pantry. Playing in the outing were (below, from left) James LaPolla, client Jim Staton and Patrick Wilson. Their team placed first in the outing.

  • Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens – HHM was among the sponsors of the Summer Garden Party. Attending were (below) John R. Martynyszyn and his guest, Nicole Ciancone.

  • Heart Reach Neighborhood Ministries — Martin Boetcher and Shawna L’Italien were among the sponsors for of a golf outing supporting the nonprofit organization.
  • Jewish Community Center – Neil Schor was among the sponsors of the annual Suzi Solomon Golf Classic, a fundraiser that supports wellness programs, adult and youth education, cultural engagement and community outreach.
  • Mahoning County Juvenile Court Community Advisory Board – HHM was among the supporters of the Bags & Baubles Event, a fundraiser for local youth programs. Among the attendees were (below, from left) staff members Beth Bacon and Mary Hauger, Rachelle Goske, Pat Chambers and Ron Chambers.

  • Niles Youth Sports Leagues — Matthew Ries sponsored the youth baseball and soccer leagues. The Niles youth baseball team won the Route 304 League Championship in the 7/8 Boys division. Anthony Ries (seventh from left in the photo below) is Matthew’s son.

  • Northeast Ohio Adoption Services – HHM was among the sponsors of the organization’s annual golf outing fundraiser. 
  • North Mar Church – Kevin Murphy sponsored the Annual Bikeathon.
  • United Way – Matthew Ries and Paul Dutton were among the sponsors of a Preston Auto Group golf outing that benefits the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley.
  • Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County – HHM and Martin Boetcher were among the sponsors of the library system’s Ladies in Little Black Dresses for Literacy fundraising event and the Literary Society Author Event.
  • Ross Griffin Memorial Foundation – James LaPolla sponsored and participated in the annual golf outing. 
  • Rotary Club of Warren – Patrick Wilson was among the sponsors of Opening Night, a family-oriented New Year’s Eve celebration downtown. 
  • Salem Area Chamber of Commerce — Shawna L’Italien, John Dellick and Neil Maxwell were among the supporters of the chamber and its 2023 calendar. Shawna L’Italien also supported the Adopt a Planter initiative.
  • Salem Kiwanis – The firm and Shawna L’Italien were among the annual sponsors for the club’s events.
  • Salem Sustainable Opportunity Development Center – The firm was among the financial sponsors of the SOD Center’s economic development efforts.
  • Simply Slavic – HHM was among the sponsors of this festival that celebrates the Mahoning Valley’s Slavic heritage and traditions.
  • Trumbull County Bar Association — Kevin Murphy, Patrick Wilson, Thomas Carey and James LaPolla were among the sponsors for the association’s golf outing fundraiser. Pictured below (from left) are Thomas Carey, James LaPolla, Patrick Wilson and Kevin Murphy.

  • Trumbull County Historical Society – Matthew Ries, a member of the society, was among the sponsors of its Annual Octoberfest.
  • Valley Economic Development Partners – Shawna L’Italien was among the sponsors of the development agency’s annual golf outing fundraiser.
  • Youngstown CityScape – HHM was a sponsor of the annual Streetscape beautification event.
  • Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber — HHM and Shawna L’Italien were among the sponsors of the Athena Awards. Shawna Erb L’Italien, Patrick Wilson and James LaPolla and their guests were pleased to be part of the banquet (photo below).

  • Warren Kiwanis – Matthew Ries was among the sponsors of the annual turkey trot.

Pro Bono Services

  • Community Legal Aid – Shawna L’Italien provided pro bono estate planning services to various clients of the nonprofit legal service.
  • Society of St. Vincent de Paul Northeast Ohio District Council – Tom Carey and Kevin Murphy provided pro bono legal assistance to the council.
  • Shawna L’Italien also provided pro bono legal services to several other local nonprofits, including the SOD Center, the United Local High School Community Scholarship Foundation and the Salem Kiwanis Club.
