HHM Releases 2022 Community Report

The lawyers and staff at Harrington, Hoppe & Mitchell, Ltd. are dedicated to supporting the Mahoning Valley. We provide financial and in-kind support throughout the year to organizations that support economic development, healthcare, education, the arts, food distribution, youth sports and much more.

Support for Community Organizations & Events

In 2022, HHM lawyers were proud to contribute financial support or time to more than 20 local organizations or events.

Education

  • Diocese of Youngstown – John Martynyszyn coached the West Catholic Crusaders football team of 4th-, 5th- and 6th-graders. 
  • Harding High School – Patrick Wilson, Thomas Carey and James LaPolla were among the sponsors of the Warren Legends reunion celebration and golf outing that raise money for the school’s football program. Matthew Ries was a sponsor for the football program.
  • John F. Kennedy Catholic School – HHM and lawyers Kevin Murphy, Patrick Wilson and Michael McGee were among the sponsors of the “Just for Kicks” Auction. Patrick Wilson sponsored a golf outing that benefits the JFK Goalliners. James LaPolla was among the sponsors of a golf outing that supports the boys basketball program. Patrick Wilson supported “The Lion King.” James LaPolla, Kevin Murphy and Michael McGee contributed to a banner congratulating the golf team. James LaPolla coached the high school boys golf team and also was legal advisor for a mock trial team.
  • Lakeview Local Schools — Patrick Wilson supported the schools’ fall sports programs.
  • Niles McKinley High School — Matthew Ries served as an attorney advisor for the mock trial team.
  • Salem High School — Shawna L’Italien was a patron sponsor for the Alumni Association.
  • South Range Local Schools — Neil Maxwell supported the Little Raider football program.

Arts & Theater

  • Stambaugh Auditorium – Marty Boetcher was a sponsor with program/playbill ads for the 2022-23 season.

Health

  • Alta Behavioral Healthcare – Marty Boetcher was among the sponsors of the One Time For The Kids’ Christmas Benefit.
  • American Cancer Society — Paul Dutton was among the sponsors of the society’s “Real Men Wear Pink” campaign.
  • Mercy Health – Kevin Murphy was among the sponsors of the Mercy Health Founder’s Circle Dinner at the Avalon Grand Resort.
  • Panerathon – HHM was among the sponsors of the Mahoning Valley’s largest fundraising event, which benefits the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center at St. Elizabeth Hospital, the first comprehensive breast care center in the region. A large group of our lawyers and their families participated (photo below).
  • Panera Knead for Knowledge – Kevin Murphy was among the sponsors of an event in Tampa, Fla., that supported Children’s Cancer Center of Tampa. 
  • Salem Regional Medical Center – Shawna L’Italien and Marty Boetcher were among the sponsors of a golf outing that supports the hospital.
  • Shepherd of the Valley – Patrick Wilson was among the sponsors of a golf outing that benefits the Shepherd’s Foundation, a benefactor of Shepherd of the Valley retirement centers.

Civic and Charitable Causes

  • Community Action Agency of Columbiana County HHM was among the sponsors of a golf outing that raises funds for the Healthier Community Food Pantry. Playing in the outing were (below, from left) HHM lawyers Patrick Wilson, James LaPolla, Paul Dutton and Kevin Murphy.  
  • Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens HHM was among the sponsors of the Summer Garden Party. Attending were (below) Neil and Dr. Harriet Lemberger-Schor, Paul and Sallie Dutton and Matthew and Gina Ries. 
  • Heart Reach Neighborhood Ministries — HHM was among the sponsors of a golf outing supporting the nonprofit organization.
  • Jewish Community Center – Neil Schor was among the sponsors of the annual Suzi Solomon Golf Classic, a fundraiser that supports wellness programs, adult and youth education, cultural engagement and community outreach.
  • Junior League of the Mahoning Valley – John Dellick was among the primary sponsors of the Paw Lapalooza dog show, a fundraiser for the Junior League.
  • Mahoning County Juvenile Court Community Advisory Board – HHM was among the supporters of the Bags & Baubles Event, a fundraiser for local youth programs. Among the attendees were (below, from left) Karen Morris, Dr. Harriet Lemberger-Schor, Neil Schor, Beth Bacon, Judge Theresa Dellick and James LaPolla.  
  • Niles Community Services – James LaPolla was among the sponsors of a golf outing that supports the agency.
  • Niles Youth Soccer League — HHM sponsored and lawyer Matthew Ries and his wife, Gina, coached their children’s soccer team.
  • Northeast Ohio Adoption Center – HHM was among the sponsors of the “Celebrating Family and Children” event in support of the center.
  • United Way – Kevin Murphy, James LaPolla and Paul Dutton were among the sponsors of a Preston Auto Group golf outing that benefits the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley.
  • Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County – HHM was among the sponsors of a presentation by author Elin Hilderbrand at the library’s newly renovated Main branch. At our table for the event were (below, clockwise, from left) Shawna L’Italien, Mark L’Italien, John Martynyszyn, James LaPolla, Ron Chambers, Marty Boetcher, Mary Hauger and Beth Bacon. The firm also supported the library system’s capital campaign and its Literary Society. 
  • Rotary Club of Warren – Patrick Wilson was among the sponsors of Opening Night, a family-oriented New Year’s Eve celebration downtown. 
  • Salem Area Chamber of Commerce — Shawna L’Italien, John Dellick and Neil Maxwell were among the supporters of the chamber and its 2023 calendar.
  • Salem Community Foundation Police & Firefighters Fund – Shawna L’Italien was among the sponsors of an annual golf outing that benefits this fund. 
  • Salem Kiwanis Club – Shawna L’Italien was among the sponsors of a dodgeball tournament that supports the club.
  • Salem Sustainable Opportunity Development Center (SOD Center) – The firm was among the financial sponsors of the SOD Center’s economic development efforts.
  • Simply Slavic – Alan Wenger and Paul Dutton were among the sponsors of this festival that celebrates the Mahoning Valley’s Slavic heritage and traditions.
  • Threshold Residential Services – Marty Boetcher was the easel sponsor for a Sip & Paint fundraiser that provides individuals with development disabilities opportunities for personal growth, independence and better quality of life. Darlene Anderson was among the attendees.
  • Trumbull County Bar Association — Kevin Murphy, Patrick Wilson, Thomas Carey and James LaPolla were among the sponsors for the association’s golf outing fundraiser.
  • Trumbull County Historical Society – Matthew Ries was among the sponsors of the 7th Annual Octoberfest, which supports the society.
  • Valley Economic Development Partners – Paul Dutton and Shawna L’Italien were among the sponsors of the development agency’s annual golf outing fundraiser.
  • Youngstown CityScape – Paul Dutton was a sponsor of the annual Streetscape beautification event.
  • Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber — Neil Schor was among the sponsors of a VIP reception with one of the chamber’s guest speakers.
Pro Bono Services

HHM lawyers Paul Dutton and Shawna L’Italien provided pro bono legal services for these nonprofit organizations, as well as individual clients supported by Community Legal Aid.
