HHM Releases 2021 Community Report

The lawyers and staff at Harrington, Hoppe & Mitchell, Ltd. are dedicated to supporting the Mahoning Valley. We provide financial and in-kind support throughout the year to organizations that support economic development, healthcare, education, the arts, food distribution, youth sports and much more.

Support for Community Organizations & Events

In 2021, HHM lawyers were proud to contribute financial support or time to more than 30 local organizations or events.

Education

  • Chaney High School – HHM supported the Neil Buzzacco Memorial Golf Outing and lawyer Patrick Manning and his spouse participated.
  • Holy Family School – Patrick Manning was among the sponsors of a golf outing that raised funds for the school.
  • John F. Kennedy Catholic School – HHM lawyers Kevin Murphy and Patrick Wilson were among the sponsors of the “Just for Kicks Auction,” which benefits the school.  Wilson supported the Goal Liners Golf Outing, which benefited the school’s boosters. Wilson, Murphy and lawyer Michael McGee were among the supporters of the school’s football program. Wilson supported the Wolves of Warren event and the Flying Eagle 5K Run/Walk, which benefit the school.
  • Lakeview Local Schools – Patrick Wilson supported the schools’ fall sports programs.
  • Niles Mock Trial Team – Matthew Ries served as an attorney advisor for the Mock Trial Team at Niles McKinley High School. The team won the district mock trial.
  • Poland Local Schools – Abbey Rhein was among the supporters of the Poland All-Sports Boosters. Rhein supported the boosters’ golf outing fundraiser.
  • United High School – Shawna L’Italien donated to the United Community Scholarship Foundation, which benefits the school.
  • Ursuline High School – Patrick Manning was among the sponsors of the school’s annual auction fundraiser. Manning attended the 40th Anniversary Donald E. Foley Sr. Alumni Golf Open fundraiser. Manning also supported the football program.
  • Warren City Schools – HHM lawyers Matthew Ries, Kevin Murphy, Patrick Wilson, Abbey Rhein, Thomas Carey and John Pogue were among the supporters of the Warren Gridiron Club’s Warren Football Legends event, which supports Warren G. Harding High School football players. Ries is a member of the Harding Football Association and supported the Harding football program.
  • Youngstown State University English Festival – Paul Dutton and Patrick Manning were among the sponsors of this event, which cultivates reading and writing among local high school students.

Arts & Theater

  • Miracle on Easy Street – HHM was pleased to be among the sponsors of the holiday-themed performance, which was produced by Easy Street Productions.
  • Youngstown Symphony Society – HHM supported the society.

Health

  • Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley – HHM was pleased to support the Clubs for Kids golf outing and lawyer Paul Dutton participated.
  • Mercy Health Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Center – HHM was among the sponsors of the Panerathon in downtown Youngstown, a fundraiser for the health care center. A large group of lawyers and their families participated.
  • Salem Regional Medical Center – HHM was among the sponsors of the summer Golf Classic, which raises funds for the hospital.
  • Sight for All United – HHM was among the sponsors of the nonprofit organization’s Eye Ball of the Mahoning Valley, and lawyer Neil Schor attended with his wife, Dr. Harriet Schor, and Dr. Fareedah Goodwin-Capers and Dante Capers.
  • Trumbull Family Fitness – HHM lawyer Matthew Ries supported the organization with a year-end donation.

Civic and Charitable Causes

  • Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County – HHM was among the supporters of the Designer Purse Bingo event and lawyer Abbey Rhein attended, along with staff members Peggy Miller, Beth Bacon, Brenda Silman, Darlene Anderson, Bonnie Adams and Karen Sampson. Rhein also was among the sponsors of the league’s golf outing fundraiser.
  • Anthony Civ. Memorial Fund – Abbey Rhein was a sponsor of a golf outing to support the fund, which benefits a community member in need. The 2021 recipient was Mark Fabian Jr.
  • Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church – HHM lawyers Michael McGee and Thomas Carey supported the church with a bulletin ad.
  • Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens – HHM was among the supporters of the Summer Garden Party and lawyers Paul Dutton and Neil Schor attended the event with their spouses.
  • Girard Youth Soccer League – HHM sponsored and lawyer Matthew Ries and his wife, Gina, coached their children Aria and Anthony’s soccer teams.
  • Heart Reach Neighborhood Ministries – Shawna L’Italien and Martin Boetcher supported the organization.
  • Howland Athletic Club – Martin Boetcher was among the sponsors of the club.
  • Jewish Community Center – Neil Schor was among the supporters of the Suzi Solomon Golf Classic at Squaw Creek in Vienna.
  • Joe Bonarigo Memorial – Abbey Rhein sponsored a golf outing that raised funds for this memorial to a Poland resident.
  • Mahoning County Juvenile Court – HHM was among the sponsors of the court Community Advisory Board’s Bags and Baubles event. Attending the event were lawyer Abbey Rhein and staff members Beth Bacon, Peggy Miller, Mary Hauger and Karen Morris.
  • Mahoning Valley Economic Development Corporation Golf Outing – HHM was among the sponsors of the event, which benefits its Grow Biz loan fund.
  • Neil Kennedy Recovery Center – Paul Dutton supported the center’s golf outing fundraiser.
  • Niles Youth Soccer League – HHM sponsored and lawyer Matthew Ries, and his wife, coached his children’s soccer team.
  • “Peyton Strong” – Abbey Rhein supported the “Ohio’s Strongest Ghoul” weightlifting event at Iron Fit Crew Functional Fitness in Struthers to raise funds for a New Middletown girl battling childhood bone cancer.
  • Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County – HHM supported the library system’s capital campaign. Martin Boetcher supported the Ladies in Little Black Dresses for Literacy fundraising event.
  • Quaker Fraternal Order of Police – Shawna L’Italien, John Dellick, Abbey Rhein and Neil Maxwell were among the sponsors of the Quaker FOP Lodge 88’s “Stand with Cops” campaign.
  • Salem Area Chamber of Commerce – Shawna L’Italien, John Dellick and Neil Maxwell were among the supporters of the chamber and its 2022 calendar. L’Italien serves on the chamber’s Legislative Affairs committee and as a chamber ambassador. The firm also supported the chamber’s Downtown Planters event, which aims to clean up and beautify the city.
  • Salem Kiwanis Club – HHM lawyer Shawna L’Italien is a long-time member and supporter of the club and its many activities, including the annual Antique Show and the club’s 100-year anniversary.
  • Salem Sustainable Opportunity Development Center (SOD Center) – Shawna L’Italien serves on the center’s board and as its secretary and treasurer. The firm donated to the center in support of its economic development efforts.
  • Trumbull County Historical Society – HHM lawyers Matthew Ries, Abbey Rhein, John Pogue, Thomas Carey and Alan Wenger were pleased to support the Octoberfest on the Square fundraiser.
  • United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley – Kevin Murphy, Paul Dutton and John Pogue supported the Preston Auto Group Golf Outing, which raises funds for the United Way.
  • Youngstown CityScape – HHM was a sponsor of the annual Streetscape beautification event and lawyers Paul Dutton and Patrick Manning volunteered to plant flowers in the city.
  • Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber Athena Awards – HHM supported the Athena Awards at Waypoint 4180 in Canfield and lawyers Neil Schor, Alan Wenger, Shawna L’Italien and Martin Boetcher attended with their spouses. Lawyers Abbey Rhein and Kevin Murphy attended a chamber VIP reception with Jon Arnold.

Pro Bono Services

  • Paul Dutton served several clients with estate planning and probate matters in conjunction with Community Legal Aid.
  • Shawna L’Italien served many clients in conjunction with Community Legal Aid and also provided pro bono assistance to multiple charitable organizations.
  • Thomas Carey and his wife often volunteer at Society of St. Vincent de Paul Trumbull County soup kitchen.
Service to Local Boards & Committees

Matthew Ries was appointed to the boards of Trumbull Historical Society, Trumbull Family Fitness and William Swanston Charitable Fund.

Neil Schor was appointed to the board of Stambaugh Auditorium Association.

Shawna L’Italien was appointed to the boards of Consumers National Bank and its parent company, Consumers Bancorp.

Thomas Carey was appointed to the board of Trumbull County Children’s Services.
